Tiebreak

Crypto exchanges · head to head

You've narrowed it to two exchanges. We break the tie.

Tiebreak compares crypto exchanges two at a time — Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Bybit, OKX and more — scored on fees, security, assets, regulation, custody, ease and region. No coin calls, no hype, no ranking bought by the highest bidder.

What Tiebreak is for

Tiebreak exists for one moment: you have read enough to shortlist two exchanges, and now you are stuck. A ranked list of forty venues does not help there — you already know the names, you just need the tie broken. Each matchup grades both sides on the same seven objective axes, shows a scorecard, and ends with a plain "who should pick which". You can disagree with a single row without throwing out the result.

What it will never do

We will not tell you what to buy, whether to buy now, or where a price is going. Those questions fill the search box and empty wallets, and the honest answer to all of them is the same: nobody knows. What a comparison can settle is which venue holds your money more safely, charges you less to use it, and lets you leave when you want. That is a smaller promise than most crypto sites make, and it is one we can actually keep.

Independent, and plain about it

Some exchanges pay us if you sign up through a link; some — like Bitstamp — pay nothing and still win rows on merit. Where a market cannot lawfully be promoted to US, UK or EU readers, we write the comparison but place no sign-up link on it. Start with the flagship, Coinbase vs Kraken, and read our affiliate disclosure so you know exactly how the site pays for itself. None of this is financial advice.

Common questions

Is Coinbase or Kraken the better exchange?
Neither wins outright — it depends on what you value. Kraken is usually cheaper once you use its Pro/Advanced screen and it has a long clean security record; Coinbase is simpler to start with, better documented, and a US public company, but its instant-buy spread is expensive. Our Coinbase vs Kraken scorecard splits it fee-by-fee and factor-by-factor so you can pick the side that fits you.
Can I use Binance or KuCoin in the US or UK?
Largely no, and that shapes every matchup involving them. Binance.com does not serve US customers and closed UK sign-ups in 2023; KuCoin is barred from the US under a 2025 court settlement until at least 2027. We still write the honest comparison people search for, but we never place a sign-up link on a market you probably cannot legally use — we point you to the compliant side instead.
How do you decide which exchange wins a head-to-head?
We score seven objective, checkable axes: fees, supported assets, security and track record, regulation, custody and withdrawal, ease of use, and regional availability. We never score on price predictions or 'which coin to buy'. Each scorecard shows who takes each row and why, so you can disagree with a single line without throwing out the whole comparison.
Do you get paid to name a winner?
No. Some exchanges pay us a commission if you open an account through our link, and we disclose that on every page — but a payout never moves a result. Where the honest pick is an exchange that pays us nothing, like Bitstamp, we say so plainly. The scorecard is the same for a partner and a non-partner.
Should I read a versus page or the full rankings?
Read a head-to-head when you have already narrowed it to two names and want the tie broken; read a ranked list when you are starting from scratch. Tiebreak does the two-name comparison in depth. If you want the whole field ranked first, we link out to an independent best-exchange guide rather than re-ranking it here.
